"Netiquette ACF Subscribers Must Observe"In behalf of all the subscribers, allow me to officially welcome you to the fully automated Discussion Group & Mailing List of the ACADEMY CAVALIERS' FORUM or the ACF. You are now on your own and may begin communicating with the other subscribers in this list. However, before you do so, please take note of the following STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES AND POLICIES (SOPPs) which you are requested to adhere to and abide with.
- USE OF E-MAIL SIGNATURE - Always indicate your "e-mail signature" at the bottom part of every posting you make. Your "E-Mail Signature" should always be an integral part of your posting. Please see to it that the following basic information is included in it:
- Your Full Name & Nickname
- Class/Membership Category
- Your Current Location
Aside from the above basic information, you may include any other information you want ... such as phone & fax numbers, short quotes, E-mail address, home page URL, etc. However, just see to it that you limit it to not more than 6 lines (blank space/line included).
- CHANGING OF CURRENT SETTINGS - Avoid changing your current settings as a subscriber. There are different options & features available as mentioned in the confirmation letter you received. For the moment don't attempt doing anything unless you are already familiar with LISTSERV commands. You could mess things up and create problems which you might not be able to solve yourself. For the moment, just continue to receive the postings made and also start making your own postings.
- THE USE OF CAPITAL CASE LETTERS - Kindly refrain from using capital case letters for the contents of your postings. In mailing lists, discussion groups, and even in the sending of e-mail this is tantamount to SHOUTING! ... and is considered in cyberspace as rude, offensive, and insulting. Capital letters should only be used to emphasize a word or group of words such as in titles, sub-titles, proper nouns, etc. Also, a text consisting of all capital letters is more difficult to read than the standard combination of capital and small case letters.
- WHERE TO SEND YOUR POSTINGS - Your postings which are intended to be read by all the ACF subscribers should be e-mailed to:
<ACF@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM>The posting will automatically be forwarded to all the officially listed subscribers of the ACF. This e-mail address is not case sensitive ... in other words, you may use capital case or small case letters or even a combination of both and it won't make a difference.
- FLAMING - is inappropriate and will not be tolerated in this mailing list. "Flames" (insults) belong in private mail, if they belong in mail at all. Discussions will often result in disagreements. Rebuttals to another person's opinions or beliefs should always be made in a rational, logical and mature manner, whether they are made publicly or privately. Each subscriber will be entitled to his or her own opinion and we should respect whatever that opinion is.
- FOUL LANGUAGE - Subscribers should refrain from abusive or derogatory language that might be considered questionable by even the most liberal and open-minded of networkers. If you wouldn't say it in public or in front of your mother, don't say it in electronic mail. It is expected that all members of the ACF will act as officers and gentlemen/ladies.
- UNSOLICITED ADVERTISING & CHAIN LETTERS - Most of these are contrary to appropriate use policies governing the use of the poster's Internet access provider. Ads and chain letters are annoying and considered poor in taste and subscribers should refrain from sending these through e-mail.
- RECOGNIZE & ACCEPT CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES - The Internet is international, and while English is generally accepted as the common language of the network, subscribers cannot afford to take the position that everyone on the Internet understands English well. In a medium that is invariably connected to language, special understanding is required to deal with questions or statements from people for whom English is not the primary tongue. Often today (at least in the US) a person's first sustained interaction with others on an international basis is via the Internet. It is imperative that this interaction be on the highest level of cordiality and respect from the outset in order for all concerned to benefit.
- USE OF LOCAL IDIOM AND SLANG - Care should be taken when using local idiom and slang. A common word or phrase used by Americans in everyday speech, for instance, might be taken as profanity or insult by those in other English-speaking countries, and may not be understood at all by non-native speakers of English. When a list has a high international readership, it is probably best to avoid non-standard English so as to provide the clearest and least-objectionable exchange of ideas.
- ATTACHMENTS TO E-MAIL - Any form of attachment (Text, graphics, photographs, etc.) will not be allowed with postings made to the ACF. Attachments not only take up a lot of storage space but it also takes time to download. The ACF has a limited amount of available disk storage space and any significantly large attachment may cause the list to crash. It might be important to note that the ACF did crash during its first three months of operation when two postings made had extra large attachments with it which exceeded the maximum allowable disk storage space alloted to the ACF. These resulted in a complete shut down of the Forum for a number of hours which greatly inconvenienced all its members.
- REPLYING TO & QUOTING ORIGINAL MESSAGES - When replying to posted messages, you are asked not to quote the original message in its entirety. This will only unnecessarily used up the lists' limited disk storage space. Some subscribers pay by the line or size for incoming mail, and needless quotes incur additional charges on their part. Also, some mailboxes have limited storage and extra long postings fill their boxes which can deny them from receiving additional new messages.
- TYPE OF MATERIAL SUITABLE FOR POSTING - Subscribers intending to post any material to the ACF Mailing List shall see to it that these satisfy the "2 I's & the 2 E's" (Interesting, Informative, Entertaining or Educational). The material must also be of primary interest and concern to the subscribers.
- ALLOWABLE LENGTH OF A POSTING - Any posting made shall not exceed two sheets of 8.5" x 11" paper when printed out using a regular 12"-size font at single spacing. The posting of articles or topics that are extra long should be avoided, otherwise such postings shall be broken up into the maximum length allowed but in no case shall a subscriber exceed three postings per day.
Please do not abuse the Forum. The SOPPs listed above were made for important and specific purposes and it is hoped that each member will abide by it. Let us therefore not take things for granted. All the subscribers will be looking forward to your continued support for the aims and objectives of the Academy Cavaliers' Forum. Enjoy your membership with the Forum and try to participate in the many discussions. Join in the fun and avoid being a "lurker." Mahalo (thank you) and aloha.
